6. Abstract :
Since the first commercialization of the lithium secondary batteries, LiCoO2 has been mainly used as the cathode materials for the lithium secondary batteries. The LiCoO2, performs relatively satisfactorily for small electronics applications such as cellular phone and laptop computers. However, cost and safety characteristics as well as capacity and cycle life characteristics becomes very important for the large scale application of the secondary batteries to such as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and electric vehicles (EV), and the required specifications for the cathode materials for the large scale lithium secondary batteries for PHEV and EV exceeds those of LiCoO2. For the development of novel cathode materials thorough understanding of LiCoO2 and possible candidates will be very beneficial. In this talk, general background about lithium secondary batteries will be given and some of the experimental data will be discussed. The synchrotron based in situ X-ray techniques are used as a main tool to understand the behavior of the cathode materials.
