6. Abstract :
In this seminar I will give an overview of Green Technology with emphasis on renewable energy and CO2 capture and storage (CCS). A brief introduction to the recent climate changes caused by accumulation of the green house gases in the atmosphere along with international agreement on mandatory cut-down of CO2 emission, which brought a new business paradigm to all industrial sectors. There are two direct ways of reducing CO2 emission without greatly disrupting current industrial activities; 1) to increases the use of renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy, bioenergy, hydrogen energy etc. and 2) to capture CO2 emitted by the use of fossil fuel and then permanently store it in onshore or offshore sediments. Technologies for saving energy and improving the efficiency in energy consumption are also important parts of GT. I will review some of the renewable energy, in particular solar cell, hydrogen energy, and bioenergy, and CCS technologies from the view points of current technological issues, breakthrough needed for practical application, and future prospects.
