A. OBJECTIVE
A government-based agency has to approve the plan for energy supply of about 15,000
new houses in Quebec. Each house has average energy consumption for heating of
30,000 kWh/year. Among the many criteria to be considered, the agency is evaluating
the greenhouse gas emissions. The agency has received the following proposals:
Proposal No. 1, Received from the electrical utility company (off-site energy source)
The electrical utility company has proposed to build a new power generating facility to
cover the expected demand. The power generation plant can have the following three
design alternatives:
1. Hydro run-on-river
2. Thermal plant using heavy oil as the primary energy source
3. Thermal plant using natural gas as the primary energy source
Proposal No. 2, Received from a different utility company (on-site energy source)
Another utility company has proposed to distribute the energy source directly to each
new house, using:
1. Natural gas
2. Oil
B. YOUR TASK
Your company has been hired by the government-based agency to estimate the
greenhouse gas emissions of the above design alternatives and options. You are asked to
recommend the plan of action based on the analysis that will lead to the minimum
greenhouse gas emissions over the life cycle of houses of 30 years.
C. CALCULATIONS AND DESIGN PROCEDURE
1. Use the information from all lectures posted on the course website. If some
information is missing, make your own assumptions based on the referenced
publications or other web sites.
2. Calculate the equivalent-CO2 emissions due to the heating needs of the houses for
each design alternative and option [tons/year], using one of the three methods
presented in the class and website.
3. Calculate the equivalent-CO2 emissions due to the heating needs of the houses for
each design alternative and option, over the life cycle of 30 years [tons].
4. Recommend the “design option” that is expected to produce the minimum
greenhouse gas emissions.
5. Compare the results of your recommended “design option” with the total
emissions of your preferred car over the same period of 30 years. Assume that
you are driving about 15,000 miles/year. How many cars will equal the total
greenhouse gas emissions calculated above?
E. PRESENTATION OF THE ANALYSIS AND THE FINAL REPORT
Your report must contain the following:
1. Cover page containing: course number and section, your name and I.D. number,
date of submission, and the instructor name.
2. All formula used in the calculations.
3. Numeric values of each variable used in the formula.
4. Set of calculations for each design alternative.
5. Final results with the appropriate units.
6. Source of assumptions and values used in the calculations.
7. Justify your recommendation for the “design option” selected (item No. 4 of the
above procedure).
