The BK (Brain Korea) Program is a higher education initiative supported by the Ministry of Education aimed at fostering world-class graduate programs and cultivating outstanding research talent. It focuses on supporting master's and doctoral students as well as early-career researchers (postdoctoral fellows and contract faculty), as part of a national effort to nurture a creative academic next generation.
The School of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Seoul National University has successfully completed the first phase of the BK21 project over the past seven years. As a result, the department achieved world-class research output. In recognition of these achievements, the department was awarded a commendation for outstanding performance on December 13, 2005.
In the second phase of the project, the department aimed not only to maintain the quantity of research output but also to enhance its quality. The goal is to elevate the department to a top-10 global ranking in the field of chemical engineering. By strengthening industry-academia collaboration, the program emphasizes practical education and research, with the aim of producing highly competitive professionals.
Project Goals
Elevate the department to a top-10 global ranking in chemical engineering by enhancing the quality of research output.
Foster and produce highly skilled researchers with international competitiveness in the chemical engineering field (more than 70 master’s and 30 doctoral graduates annually).
Develop curricula, in collaboration with partner companies, that equip students with the knowledge and skills required to become global leaders in industry and research institutions.
Actively identify and carry out industry-academia joint research projects to expand opportunities for hands-on, practical research experience.
Strengthen international collaboration—including researcher exchange and joint research—with top 10 global universities in the field of chemical engineering.
